Expert Book Editing
How exciting that your book is written! Now it needs editing—expert editing. I’m an experienced Texas-based book editor and ghost writer with clients in the United States, Canada and Australia. Below are details about how and why I chose this career.
How I Became a Book Editor
Books, books and more books! I chose English as a major due to a life-long love of books.
Many suggested I pursue journalism, but I really wanted to focus on the literary front. So I split the difference and took some journalism and copy editing classes, but stuck with my English coursework. Luckily for me, I knew how to write commercially by the time I earned an English degree.
I’ve written several hundred magazine assignments, and this became a gateway into a career as a book editor. Over the course of meeting and interviewing so many people, someone asked, “Will you edit my manuscript?” I said, “Absolutely!”
A Book Editor for all Genres
Soon I was editing all sorts of interesting books for emerging authors, from biographies to devotionals to memoirs to sci-fi adventures! What a privilege it is to work with talented clients, for the world is a better place because we have books to read—a big, rich body of literature. It’s such a honor to be a part of it!
Come to think of it, I played in the world of words long before working in it. My mother read to me before I could walk, and didn’t stop even after I could read for myself. She also bought me refrigerator magnets, which became my favorite toy. I remember trying to make sense of those alphabet letters and do the same thing today behind a keyboard!
Now people contact me because they found my website, or a book publisher recommended me, or they heard about me through word of mouth. I love these collaborations and referrals, and I would love to be your book editor too! Learn more about my book editing services here.
“Melanie is an amazing editor. The amount of time she’s taken to ensure my writing is its best and that my novels flow (yes, novels—plural), goes above and beyond the call of duty. I couldn’t have asked for anyone more supportive, encouraging and professional. She’s truly the best and I will continue to hire her to edit my novels.” ~ C. Elizabeth, Ontario, Canada, author of Soul Control, Absolute Obsession and Absolute Obstruction
Ghostwriting in Your Voice
Being a book editor is one thing…ghostwriting is another! I’m lucky to interact with people who have a story to tell — a biography, a mystery, an adventure or self-help advice. But not every story teller is a writer, and some authors need help putting their concept into words. So through tapes, Skypes, phone interviews, emails and packages sent through the mail, I sort it all out.
My job is to find the story arc and write books for clients in the strictest confidence. I do not disclose my ghostwriting projects because I’m contractually obligated not to. However, some authors may want me credited as co-author. Others credit me as editor. Each project is unique and customized for individual authors. American Cancer Society Media Award
My grandma (1910 – 2000) was a stout little German-Irish personality who suffered from advanced Alzheimer’s. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1990s, and until then I knew very little about the disease. But when someone you love suffers…well, it becomes intensely personal. In fact, it influenced my writing career.
I wrote Pink Divas, a magazine cover feature about breast cancer survival and support, eight years after my grandmother’s death. Little did I know that the following year it would receive an Excellence in Cancer Journalism Award.
This media award is given to radio, television, newspaper and magazine journalists, and I was honored to be one of only 16 recognized by the American Cancer Society throughout Hawaii, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.
Career in Media
I’ve grown an enormous portfolio of local, national and international publications—and that took a lot of hard work! If I had to choose, my favorite assignment was visiting the cowboy churches of Texas and writing about those adventures. That article, entitled “God’s Country,“ was published in the national magazine American Cowboy.
My work has been featured in the following publications as a writer, journalist or contributing editor:
Houston Modern Luxury, Hot Springs Life and Home, Houston Lifestyles & Homes Magazine, Fort Bend Lifestyles & Homes Magazine, Cy-Fair Lifestyles & Homes Magazine, The Woodlands Lifestyles & Homes Magazine, Katy Lifestyles & Homes Magazine, Katy Christian Magazine, Fort Bend Christian Magazine, Positive Impact Magazine, Katy Magazine, absolutely! Katy Magazine, absolutely! Memorial Magazine, American Cowboy, World Coal, World Cement, International Cement Review, Gulf Construction, and Dry Cargo International.
